Flashlights vs Lanterns

ADHD is complicated but the explanation doesn’t have to be. Our brains light the world in different ways and that’s what this metaphor attempts to explain. Self-understanding is the muscle that needs to be developed.

Picture a flashlight. It throws a tight, steady beam exactly where you point it. A flashlight brain holds a goal in mind while taking steps to accomplish it. Through hard work planning starts early and steady progress is made until the project is done- on time, by following the plan.

A lantern is different. It provides a glowing light in a circle around us- it just doesn’t reach far ahead enough. Lantern brains live in the present. Time is either Now or Not Now, and goals are hard to hold in mind until urgency finally makes them visible. Before learning about tools to extend the light from our lanterns, it’s essential to recognize the differences.

This isn’t about changing your lantern into a flashlight- that’s just not how it works. It’s about self-understanding and being open to support from others.
